I truly applaud Glasgow for writing these types of books, talking and showing that it’s okay that these things happen, that they aren’t taboo to talk about and acknowledging it is happening to a lot of people. I truly believe it can be of great help to a lot of people, who either go through the same or know someone who does. It can help the reader understand just a bit more of what is and can go on in the minds of those struggling. At the same time, I truly believe you have to be in the right mindset to read this book. It is very heavy and heart-breaking and can be triggering. Not being ready to read this and not fully grasping the meaning of the story would be a shame. Finally feeling ready to read this book, I am beyond glad I did. The book is truly an eye-opener for me personally. I know someone very close to me who did cut herself, who was struggling for so long, years, before I even knew about it. It is hard to process and understand why they did what they did. As someone who hasn’t struggled in such a way, it is very difficult to understand the mindset that can lead to self-harm, but reading a book like this teaches me so much! This book honestly kept me up at night, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it! I tried going to sleep and my mind would just race 100 miles an hour thinking about everything I’d read up to that point. It is haunting and beautiful and broke me and I am so glad I read it! It is easy to fall back into habits and even though we can know something is bad, we search some kind of validation and if we get it from that bad habit or in a toxic relationship, it becomes so hard to let go. Seeing those struggles put to paper is a shock, but a necessity. The writing is haunting and beautiful and truly written in a way as if I was on a path through the characters mind, walking the story of her life and learning alongside her the whole time. Her struggles, her emotions, but mostly her desires, to be seen, to be loved, to improve herself. A journey of self-discovery and all the ugly sides it can have. Overall, Girl in Pieces is an intense book about survival, self-discovery and most of all hope.
